Daily Dilemma # 9 Due 05-07-2008

Chris was just about to finish his sophomore year and felt like his whole world was crashing in around him. His mom was a recovering alcoholic and had been sober for three years . . . until now.

When Chris was in middle school his mom went through rehab. When she finally came home, Chris’s dad said he would leave her if she ever drank again. Everything seemed okay until his dad took a new job this year and had to travel a lot.

During that last few months, every time Chris’s dad left town his mom would drink. It was on the sly but Chris knew the signs. He saw the thermoses in the bathroom, the “water” bottles in her bedroom. It was like middle school all over again. It was like living in a nightmare.

The hardest part was trying to figure out what he was supposed to do. If he called her out on her drinking, his dad would probably leave all of them. If he didn’t do anything, something bad could happen to his mom. He was mad and hurt and lonely. He had friends he could talk to but what could they do? He felt like there wasn’t a single good choice to make.

What should Chris do? (Minimum 3 sentences)

What should he say to his Mom once something is decided? (Minimum 3 sentences)

What would you do in his situation? (Minimum 3 sentences)

Have you or someone you know ever faced a situation where he/she had an adult in his/her life that was doing something harmful or wrong? (Minimum 3 sentences)

What do you think is the hardest part of Chris’s dilemma? (Minimum 3 sentences)

What should Chris do? Nobody should live with someone like that. I would say that he probably should tell his dad and move in with him. I think that his dad would leave his mam but not him.
what should he say to his Mom once something is decided? He should tell his mom that he is tired of her drinking all the time. If she truly cared about him then she would stop. It is not fun living with a drunk.

What would you do in his situation? I would tell her I don’t want to live with her anymore. I then would call my dad tell him she is being a drunk again. I would tell him I am going to stay at my friends house and to come get me when he can.

Have you or someone you know ever faced a situation where he/she had an adult in his/her life that was doing something harmful or wrong? My mother was a drugatic. She made a decision that alchohol and drugs were more important then her kids. She decided I was in the way because I would tell my dad when she was high. She tried to kill me a few times. I think that she made a decision that she cant take back.

What do you think is the hardest part of Chris’s dilemma? I think the hardest decision is to lose his mom. It has been tough for me to see people with both parents. I think the hardest part is losing someone you love.

What should Chris do?
-Chris should go and talk to his mom. He should tell her how he felt about the situation. Maybe talking to his mom could help out.

What should he say to his Mom once something is decided?
-That she knew the choice she was making. That he is sorry for her and is praying for her. Also, that she did it to herself

What would you do in his situation?
-First, I would go to my friends and let them help me. Then I would talk to my mom and hopefully figure something out. Last, I would talk to my dad and see how he takes it.

Have you or someone you know ever faced a situation where he/she had an adult in his/her life that was doing something harmful or wrong? (
-Yes, I've seen this situation before. People everywhere suffer from their parents and what they do. The only thing they could do is pray about it.

What do you think is the hardest part of Chris’s dilemma?
-The part about telling his dad about it. He is scared his dad is going to leave like he said. That would be the hardest part in this situation.

What should Chris do? (Minimum 3 sentences)
My mom is a recovering alcoholic too. She has been sober for 9 years. He should speak to her about it. He should also ask her about it. He can’t be that hard on her, because it is an addiction.
What should he say to his Mom once something is decided? (Minimum 3 sentences)
He should tell her he loves her, and that he is there for her. His father may leave, but that could be could too. Maybe he is the reason why she is drinking.
What would you do in his situation? (Minimum 3 sentences)
I would just sit her down and talk to her. You could send her to AA. That helped my mother.
Have you or someone you know ever faced a situation where he/she had an adult in his/her life that was doing something harmful or wrong? (Minimum 3 sentences)
Yes, I was one. My mother quit drinking when I was five. I still remember her when she was drunk.
What do you think is the hardest part of Chris’s dilemma? (Minimum 3 sentences)
That he will have to choose between his mother or his father. Or, to hurt his mom, because she probably doesn’t know that he knows she’s doing it. She must be ashamed about it.

What should Chris do? I think he should confront his mom when his dad is gone. He shouldn't just let her drink freely. She needs someone to let her know she has a problem.

What should he say to his Mom once something is decided? He should tell her that if she doesn't quit drinking than he'll tell his father and they'll leave. Also, he should point out how everything was fine for a while and her problem is messing the family up. He should tell her the truth and not just that everything will be fine if she sneaks it.

What would you do in his situation? I would stragiht up tell my mom she has a problem. People don't just quit doing things that are bad for them, they need a person to tell them they have a problem. I couldn't just let my mom's drinking ruin our family.

Have you or someone you know ever faced a situation where he/she had an adult in his/her life that was doing something harmful or wrong? Yes- My grandmother was an alcoholic. I told her that her drinking was rendering me from having friends over, and that it was destroying our family. When she got drunk, all she did was cry and yell at my parents.

What do you think is the hardest part of Chris’s dilemma? Telling his mom she has to stop drinking. Also, the fact of his dad leaving if he finds out. No part of his problem is good.

-I think he should confront his mom. He should tell her that he knows she is drinking and he is going to tell his dad. Tell her that if she doesn’t stop he will tell his dad all about it.

What should he say to his Mom once something is decided? (Minimum 3 sentences)
-He should tell her that she should stop. There is no reason she needs to drink. All it does is cause problems in relationships and such.

What would you do in his situation? (Minimum 3 sentences)
-I would tell my mom that I was going to tell my dad. I would tell her to stop and go back to rehab or I was telling. If he does nothing, it will just get even worse.

Have you or someone you know ever faced a situation where he/she had an adult in his/her life that was doing something harmful or wrong? (Minimum 3 sentences)
-No, not really. I’ve never been in that kind of a situation. I hope that I never have to go through that kind of a situation either.

What do you think is the hardest part of Chris’s dilemma? (Minimum 3 sentences)
-I think the hardest part is that he can’t tell his dad that his mom is drinking. If he does he will more than likely leave them all. Also, if he doesn’t tell him, things will only get worse.
